Orthopedic Rehabilitation Massage
Orthopedic massage is a specialized form of bodywork which combines assessment and treatment techniques from many traditions. The goal is to promote change within the structure and function of the neuro-musculoskeletal soft tissue to induce healing of the whole person.
Specifically, orthopedic massage assists the body with the rehabilitation of soft tissue to a pre-injury condition. This is accomplished by dissolving adhesions, lengthening short muscles, strengthening lax muscles, facilitating normal neurological function with muscle energy technique, and releasing the entrapment of peripheral nerves.
Orthopedic massage is designed to thoroughly address specific physiological dysfunctions with an exciting new approach to the treatment of many pain and injury conditions previously treated only with conventional methods.

Types of Orthopedic Massage
Contract Relax
This technique is generally used in tandem with the Muscle Energy Technique. The intention of applying CR is to achieve relaxation in hypertonic muscles. It is one of the best modalities used to bring sensory awareness to a muscle, and to assess weakness or pain in specific muscles.
Muscle Energy Technique
The basis of the Muscle Energy Technique is to employ the conscious, voluntary contraction of isolated muscles. Isolated voluntary contraction is different from a muscle contraction that would occur in a daily activity or function. It is an amazingly versatile technique that can be applied to almost any muscle in the body. The intention is to reduce trigger points while lengthening hypertonic shortened muscles. Once the hypertonic muscles have been released the Muscle Energy Technique can also be used to strengthen the surrounding weaker muscles. This technique is designed to be pain free.
Wave Mobilization
A massage stroke unique to Orthopedic Massage, Wave Mobilization was developed through a combination of Tai Chi and clinical massage. There are two main aspects:
- Rocking the entire body in an oscillating rhythm, simulating the ebb and flow of the ocean.
- Applying a massage stroke into the mobilized body, much like the back and forth movement of water against the sea floor.
